I have always enjoyed attending Camelot Days Medieval Festival at T.Y. Park in Hollywood, Fl. I like to photograph graffiti, poster art, what have you. If it's artistic and cool looking, I'll take a picture of it and then add my own personal touch in Lightroom or Photoshop. I took this particular shot in Tallin, Estonia. It was an old weather worn poster in some type of display case with graffiti on the outside. The graffiti is an added touch but its the racoon that attracted me.

Valparaiso, Chile is a UNESCO World Hertiage City offering someone with a camera plenty of subject matter to focus upon. Valparaiso is about 75 miles west of Santiago and can be reached by bus, taxi or rental car.

Valparaiso is a multi-level city meaning there are alot of slopes and hills. For less than a dollar each way you can take one of the ascensores up or down between the cerros (hilltop neighborhoods) and sea level. You can't beat it if you want to explore the various cerros with your camera as each cerro is full on unique artwork that is fun to photograph.
My first digital DLSR was a Pentax K100D. I purchased the camera as part of a kit which included two zoom lenses. One of these zooms was a Tamron 70-300mm f4-5.6 Di Ld macro. Although this a relatively inexpensive lens, it serves its purpose. One of the first things I did after the camera arrived was mount this lens and head out to Butterfly World in Coconut Creek, Fl.
This is one of the many butterfly shots I took that day. I think I had the lens set on macro mode (you never know). It did a great job of knocking the background out of focus.
The Punts were a New Wave band in San Francisco and at this point in time had a "hit" single titled Shelly's Boyfriend. When I say "hit" I mean it got alot of airplay on KUSF, a college radio station broadcasting throughout the San Franscico Bay area.

The Punts eventually signed with Slash Records and changed their name to Bonnie Hayes and the Wild Combo. They released an album on Slash Records titled Good Clean Fun and a second album on Bondage Records titled Brave New Girl. They were very popular in San Francisco in the early to mid 80s and I went to many of their shows.

These particular images were taken the first time I saw the band at the Keystone Berkeley. The band was Bonnie Hayes (vocals and piano), Paul Davis (guitar), Hank Maninger (bass) and Kevin Hayes on drums. Two images I shot this particular night were published in KUSF Wave Sector magazine.
One day as I pulled into the parking lot at my community college, they made an announcement on the radio that Stones tickets had just gone on sale. I immediately backed back out of my spot and headed for Tower Records to stand in line and buy tickets.

The Rolling Stones were on tour promoting their new album Tatoo You. They played two shows at Candlestick Park (October 17 and 18, 1981). George Thorogood & the Destroyers and the J. Geils band opened for them.

Ticket sales were limited to four per person. I bought four knowing I would not have a problem finding three people to go with me. We stood in a very long line outside the stadium and eventually got in. One of my friends asked where we wanted to sit. Sit? I pointed to the stage and said "there." My friend Consuela followed me while the others found seats in the upper decks. We made our way down to the field saying "Excuse me, excuse me, excuse me..." We ended up front row center but had to back up some as when I aimed my camera at the stage all I saw was the bottom of the stage.

I got some good shots of George Throgood & the Destroyers as well as the J. Geils band. One roll of B&W each. Prior to the Stones coming on, more and more people jammed onto the field. One guy got mad when we stepped on his blanket and Consuela said "Look Buddy, you just don't come out and have a picnic and watch the Stones on a Sunday afternoon."

The stage crew sprayed everyone up front with a firehose to help keep us cool. We were soon packed together like sardines. Once the Stones were on stage it was very difficult to shoot as peope were pressed up against me in every direction. I also had a problem with heads in front of me. Inspite of these obstacles and not being able to move my arms very much, I took several rolls of B&W and one roll of color slides.

The images here are a sampling of what I ended up with.
I shot B&W with my Pentax MX and Ektachrome slides with my Pentax ME. As usual I used a 120mm telephoto fixed lens. I shot all three bands and met the guys in Xmas Eve after they played. They were interested in seeing their pictures so we agreed to meet after I had the flim developed and contact sheets printed. There were a few shots the band liked and used on flyers for later shows. I went on to see and photograph them at other venues such as Berkeley Square and The Mab in San Francisco. I am not quite sure, but I think they opened for the Dead Kennedy's at The Mab and I shot both bands that night.
The four songs can best be described as art punk and are: Paint it Red, My House, Indestructible Man and Life's a Penitentiary. The vinyal was packaged with an insert that had liner notes and a photograph of the band. We went out into the hills and spent a few hours taking various pictures of the band in their leather jackets in what looked like the desert. One of these shots was printed on the insert and another published in BAM magazine.

I don't know much about The Lloyds. I remember seeing them at both the Keystone Berkeley and Berkeley Square. The photographs posted here are from both shows. The band was pretty popular and seemed to have a big following as both shows were packed.

I met Peter Heimlich after the Keystone gig and I think we talked about them using some of my stuff but don't really remember anything coming out of that. I reconnected with Peter a few years ago on the internet and found out that his father is the guy credited with coming up with the Heimlich manuever (Dr. Henry Heimlich). Peter disputes this. You can google it yourself if you are interested.

In any case, Peter played bass in the Lloyds and Lulu was the singer. One of their songs "And That's Why I don't Like You" is part of the movie Die Laughing soundtrack. Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3887918961114718497.post-8047670902161801232011-12-31T22:19:00.000-05:002013-04-20T10:07:24.222-04:00The Mutants

The Mutants were a very popular art punk band in the Bay Area in the late 70s and early 80s. I used to listen to them on the radio and really enjoyed their music. As much as the band played in the area I only saw them live once at Berkeley Square. Although I took a fair amount of pictures that night, Berkeley Square was not a good venue for available light photography. These are the very few shots that I found acceptable. If I could do it all over I would shoot in color rather than B&W at Berkeley Square. Oh well.

The Mutants signed with 415 Records. Their first album was titled Fun Terminal. The band was Paul Fleming, Sally Webster, Sue White, Brendan Earley, John Gullak, Fritz Fox and Dave Carothers. This show was after the release of this album. I sat at the bar and chatted with Sally a bit. She asked me what my favorite Mutants song was and I told her it was Think, Think Think. She looked at me like that was a bad choice. Well, its hard as there are so many good Mutant songs! Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2
